NENextt State Rankings 10/25/20

Class A

1.) Bellevue West 5-0

2.) Omaha Westside 8-0

3.) Millard South 6-1

4.) Elkhorn South 6-1

5.) Lincoln Southeast 7-0

6.) Omaha Creighton Prep 5-2

7.) Kearney 3-4

8.) Gretna 6-1

9.) Lincoln East 6-2

10.) North Platte 6-2

Notes:

With the revised playoff format, the only rated teams that played lasts week were Kearney and North Platte. This week looks pretty straightforward as far as the top teams go. The most intriguing playoff games will be Kearney at Gretna, North Platte at Lincoln East and Millard North at Prep. Lincoln East beat North Platte a few weeks ago at Seacrest, 21-7 so you never know what might transpire. It's never a bad thing when Millard South and Millard West get together but the Wildcats are beat up and the Patriots are going to enjoy the opportunity to send their biggest rival out of the playoffs. Not ready to call for an upset, but let's see if Columbus can cause some problems for Lincoln Southeast-the Discoverers have proven they can put points on the board with their offense. Millard North over Prep? Could happen.

Class B

1.) Omaha Skutt 6-3

2.) Bennington 8-1

3.) Elkhorn 7-2

4.) Waverly 7-2

5.) Norris 7-2

6.) Aurora 6-3

7.) Hastings 6-1

8.) Northwest 5-3

9.) McCook 6-2

10.) Plattsmouth 6-2

Notes: Maybe some controversy here but leaving Skutt at 1 and the reason why is because new D1 commit (Wyoming) Sam Scott left in the second quarter of that loss to Elkhorn and didn't return. Guessing he will be fine going forward-still, Elkhorn was moving the ball at will against the Skyhawk defense. You just can't take a D1 player like Scott off the field and not have a drop-off but this Skutt team looks vulnerable in their quest to get another state championship and Northwest won't be any pushover to start their playoff run on Friday night. Bennington was down three starting OL on Friday night (all should return this week) but their bigger issue has to be the health status of superstar Tyler LeClair. After what I've seen and heard, not ready to count him out for a return this season-they should be okay against Seward but he's arguably the best 2-way player in Class B and things get tougher the further into the playoffs the Badgers get when he's not on the field. Norris is better than they played against Waverly but the Vikings have all the ingredients to emerge out of this class. They pass the ball just well enough to complement their run game and lights out defense. Cooper Hausmann will vouch for their tenacity. McCook will make the 5 hour trek east to play Plattsmouth in a game that could be over in record time with the way both teams run the ball. A Bison win would mean they'd likely be hosting Bennington at Weiland Field in round 2. The trio of Hastings, Northwest and Aurora could probably all win against each other on any given night. Don't sleep on Aurora-the Huskies are good enough to get to Lincoln on the top half of the bracket.

Class C1

1.) Pierce 8-0

2.) St. Paul 8-1

3.) Ashland-Greenwood 9-0

4.) Kearney Catholic 7-1

5.) Adams Central 6-3

6.) Wahoo 6-2

7.) Gothenburg 6-3

8.) Auburn 7-1

9.) Mitchell 8-1

10.) Lincoln Christian 7-1

Notes: Pierce had their toughest test of the season (comparable to St. Paul) and Wayne held the potent Bluejay offense in check in their 19-9 loss. Wayne can play defense and nobody doubts that-their offense simply can't get out of 1st gear and that makes them vulnerable to lose to anyone. The Blue Devils draw a road test against an Adams Central team that is so battle tested and capable of reaching Lincoln out of the top half of that bracket. Want an upset special? Keep an eye on Battle Creek heading down to Auburn. The Braves are very battle tested-much moreso than Auburn who hasn't played a "great" opponent since week 1-Lincoln Christian has a gaudy record but their schedule is pretty suspect too. I think the Crusaders go out early against Gothenburg this week. It's a shame Central City didn't get into the playoffs-the Bison and their prolific offense only lost to Battle Creek, Ord, St. Paul and Adams Central. Not sure what happened to Cozad but ever since that loss to Adams Central, the Haymakers haven't been the same team. Mitchell is a good squad with Rylan Aguallo leading the state in rushing, averaging over 200 yards per game. But again, the Tigers schedule has been soft and Wahoo will be by far their best opponent of the season this Friday.

Class C2

1.) Archbishop Bergan 9-0

2.) Oakland-Craig 7-1

3.) Ord 7-0

4.) Yutan 7-1

5.) Aquinas Catholic 6-2

6.) Norfolk Catholic 6-2

7.) Hartington CC 7-2

8.) Wilber-Clatonia 6-1

9.) Sutton 6-1

10.) North Platte St. Pats 7-1

Notes: The seedings here drew out like the ratings as far as the top four teams go. Aquinas and Norfolk Catholic is an amazing first round game and one worthy of a road trip up to Norfolk to watch these two storied programs. The Knights held off a tough HCC team 14-10 to end the regular season last Friday. Not seeing any upsets lookimg in round 1 but HCC as the 11 seed will likely travel out to Bridgeport and travel back to host OC in round 2. Seems like a long time ago that North Platte St. Pats lost 20-13 to GICC. The Crusaders dropped their season ending game to Centura who NPSP blasted earlier in the season. The Irish travel down to Sutton where young freshman Jackson Roberts will face the best defense he's seen so far in his career.

Class D1

1.) Cross County 9-0

2.) Burwell 9-0

3.) Dundy County-Stratton 8-0

4.) Tri-County 7-0

5.) Neligh-Oakdale 8-1

6.) Stanton 7-1

7.) Howells-Dodge 7-2

8.) Lutheran High Northeast 8-1

9.) Nebraska Christian 5-2

10.) Laurel-Concord Coleridge 6-3

Notes: LCC scored one of the most impressive wins in the opening round last week, going on the road and blasting Thayer Central. The Bears now get to host Tri-County. Don't count out Evan Haisch and company as LCC is far better than their record-ask Wakefield. Stanton travels out to Arcadia-Loup City in another non-typical early round matchup. The Rebels probably deserve to be rated and they will be if they pull this one off. The other intriguing game from this next round is Howells-Dodge hosting Burwell. I said on Twitter that these two teams with their junior classes might be the favorites in D1 a year from now. Nebraska Christian and Elm Creek battle for the right to face Cross County in the quarterfinals.

Class D2

1.) BDS 8-0

2.) Central Valley 7-0

3.) Kenesaw 7-1

4.) Sandhills/Thedford 9-0

5.) FC Sacred Heart 7-1

6.) Osceola 8-0

7.) Humphrey St. Francis 8-1

8.) Pleasanton 8-1

9.) St. Mary's 9-0

10.) Allen 7-0

Notes: No changes to the ratings here as all the teams won their opening round games, handily. The reseed gives us a very intriguing round 2 mega game with Osceola traveling to the beautiful field in Humphrey to take on the HSF Flyers. This game matches last year's D2 champions against multiple players from Osceola that won the D1 title as Osceola/High Plains. We really don't know much about Osceola right now because of their schedule, which is why they're sitting in this position. We'll find out Friday. Pleasanton sitting in the 13 seed will be a favorite over Wynot. Bloomfield and St. Mary's is a rematch from three weeks ago, won 36-30 by the Cardinals. Unbeaten Allen and star Anthony Isom looks headed for an early exit against Tyson Denkert and Kenesaw. Should the Blue Devils win, they would likely host a rematch against BDS in the quarterfinals.
